Fight-Flight-Freeze-Fawn Stress Response

Most of us have heard about the fight, flight and flee response to stress. But what about the fawn response? Well, let’s put them altogether so that we can understand the different responses in the face of stress. 

Fight, flight or freeze is a set of stress response arising in natural body reactions to perceived threats. It’s a survival response that has been programmed since the days of our ancestors when there was real danger posed by dangerous animals. These days, the threats that we face are largely psychological. However, the body continues to respond in the same manner as if there is a tiger standing right in front of us.

In a nutshell, when faced with stress, your sympathetic nervous system is being activated. Hormones are released in your body after being stimulated by your adrenal glands; from a signal that was first transmitted to the hypothalamus by your amygdala, the emotional part of your brain. As a result, you are prompted to stay and fight, run and flee danger or stay frozen and stuck.

EFT Tapping Circle: What Are Group Borrowing Benefits

Group Tapping Circle Borrowing Benefits

“Borrowing Benefits” is one of the most profound discoveries in EFT tapping circles. It happens when we come together in a group to clear negative emotions or limiting benefits. “Borrowing Benefits” is the discovery that simply watching other participants do EFT on their issues, while tapping along with them, reduces the emotional intensity of our own issues. It is as if we are “borrowing” the positive energetic shifts, even though we are not directly working on our own. 

To begin with, our issues may or may not be the same as what another member of the group is going through. However, just by observing and tapping along on the issues that belong to another group member, we can potentially experience a reduction in the stress or tension that we have in relation to our own issues. This phenomena is also pretty much aligned with the concepts that “everything is energy” and that we are all inter-connected.

What does it mean to heal from the inside-out?

Well, according to naturopathic doctors, the symptoms that we see on the outside is a manifestation of what is going on from the inside. Symptoms are often the body’s way of signalling to us that something has gone wrong and we need to investigate. If our health issues are chronic  or we are in bad pain, it means that there could be an underlying root cause. When we heal from the inside-out, we are addressing the problem at a deep level. We are not just slapping on a bandaid to cover up the bleeding on the inside.

As our physical reactions today could be tied to issues that stem from childhood, applying EFT is effective because unhealed emotions can get trapped and the body keeps the score. Even though the past is long gone, it is possible to heal in the now by applying tapping.

Women often approach me for help to deal with their stress. Their stress can be anything from dealing with a money or work-related challenge, relationship problems, not feeling “good enough”, low self-love to anxiety issues. They would have been holding on to anger, worry, insecurity and frustration for a long time before asking for help. (Understandably, most of us face resistance with getting assistance.)

Some would share about experiencing the same repetitive themes of abandonment and rejection in their lives. Thus, when we get together in a session, we usually begin by patiently peeling off the layers to determine the root cause of their issues. Invariably, we would find out that these issues stem from their past – primarily in childhood. As a result, we are led to working on healing their inner child.

I’d like to address the very common concern about tapping through negative feelings while using EFT tapping. 

Recently someone who has viewed my EFT tapping videos wrote to me and shared that she did not enjoy the experience of tapping her negative feelings. If she has a choice, she would prefer to tap and just use positive affirmations. In fact, she reported how nice she felt while tapping through the positive statements along with my video. 

(For those who don’t already know, EFT tapping is a method whereby we use our finger tips to lightly tap on specific meridian points on our face and body for emotional release. It is otherwise also known as the emotional form of acupuncture but without the needles, since we are using our fingertips.)

Well, she wouldn’t need to tap through any negative feelings if it is indeed true that she had none. Hopefully she is not in denial of any actual negative feelings. May I concede that many of us are not comfortable with bring attention to our negative emotions. In fact, I used to have the same resistance myself. 

When I was first introduced to EFT tapping, I was afraid that I would be reinforcing the negatives.  I was concerned that I would start to feel worse with bringing attention to my negative feelings. It felt like a counter-intuitive thing to do when I was desperately trying to feel better.

How to Let Go of Past Trauma

Have you ever wondered how you can let go of past trauma, so that it no longer holds you back from creating the life that you want in the future?

Living with past trauma as if it is still present, can keep you in repetitive patterns.

Your body remembers the past trauma too and it is likely the reason why you find yourself having the same emotional reactions as if the past is happening now.

The same state of paralysis, anxiety and fear.

The same chills in your body, heart racing and churning in your stomach.

By being caught in the past, you can find life a struggle in the present.

You’ve got dreams and goals that you wish to fulfil. Maybe it is to align with your highest potential, to have the best relationship with your spouse ever, to run a thriving business or to manifest the most amazing life ever. Whatever it is, holding on past trauma can limit your chances of success. As a result, you could be feeling bitter, disappointed and helpless, You have the belief that there is nothing you can do to erase the past and to change your destiny.

I’d like to qualify. The traumas you’ve encountered might not have been big major events to begin with. Note that what feels traumatic for one person may not be the same for another. It might have been an incident such as being ostracised by your friends when you were in play school or being criticised for being “not good enough”. Notwithstanding, they were certainly instances that had left an indelible imprint on your subconscious.

Well, in case you consider your future ruined due to an unhappy past, there is hope. I’d like to share how it is very possible to let go of past trauma and to rewrite the story of an unhappy childhood. When you do so, it opens up new possibilities for you in manifesting a more empowering set of outcomes.

You may be wondering….

Why does it even matter to be aware about what the difference between anxiety, fear or stress is? 

Well, for a start, it matters because the more you can make a distinction, the less grip they may have on you.

You can potentially be able to release the appropriate energy and also, apply a more specific belief or targeted action that addresses what’s truly going on with you.

As much as they are related or similar, there are definitely subtle differences between feeling anxious, panicking, and being frozen by fear.

Making a distinction addresses the gap that brings about a shift at a deeper layer. In other words, when you integrate the positive belief that addresses where the specific issue lies, you can potentially be free of your anxiety, fear or stress. You solve the mystery for integration into wholeness, in other words.

Admittedly, most of us do not make any distinction between the terms used. We tend to lump negative emotional states into one broad word “stress”. It’s just convenient to use “stress”. In fact, “stress” is often used by those who are unwilling to face their vulnerability and to avoid digging deeper. It is much easier to say that you are stressed than to say that you are anxious or depressed, if you wish to avoid questions from others.

What is Past Life Therapy? A FAQ Guide On Releasing The Past

Wondering if you should go for a past life therapy?

Perhaps you have got an inkling that the negative patterns that you are currently having stem from blocks that were created in past lives.

It’s not as if you have not tried to address your issues. You may have gone for some childhood therapy or counselling sessions, yet you are still stuck or feeling blocked. The same patterns keep repeating.
