Lessons from the Chinese Bamboo Tree

Are you feeling impatient or dejected over the lack of any evidence of success?

Would the following situation be what you are currently experiencing?…You’ve put in the hard work with blood, sweat and tears and you’d like to see some “proof” of result. However, it’s been quite some time and you are still not observing any signs of progress. There is nothing or little feedback to indicate that you are moving in the right direction or that the Universe has been paying attention to your prayers.

If so, allow me to introduce to you lessons from the Chinese Bamboo Tree.

The parable is one of my favorites. It offers important lessons on faith, perseverance and patience. It’s one that I like to remind myself when I am still in the building or foundational phase of a venture or project.Continue reading

In Gratitude to Mr Lee Kuan Yew

“I have no regrets.
I have spent my life, so much of it, building up this country. There’s nothing more that I need to do.
At the end of the day, what have I got?
A successful Singapore.
What have I given up?
My life.”
– Mr Lee Kuan Yew

I was going to post my usual spin of articles on my blog. However, I had been feeling rather blue the whole morning. And so I thought I would share what’s been going on with me.

My tears flowed when I woke up and read the news. Singapore’s founding father, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, had passed away at 3:18am. He was 91. He was the leader who guided us for 50 years since independence.

Meditative Contemplation by A Duck in Botanic Gardens

“Meditation has only one meaning, and that is going beyond the mind and becoming a witness. In your witnessing is the miracle — the whole mystery of life.” – Osho

(Photo taken: Singapore Botanic Gardens)

The duck looks into the pond and contemplates its own reflection.

It also contemplates on the reflection of the fluffy clouds, the woody trees and the soaring birds in the background.

The duck instantly recognizes that it is part of the scenery of a beautiful park.

How to Release the Ego from Struggle

negative self talk patterns

Unwilling to back down from a conflict or argument?

Find it hard to forgive and forget…..but finding it easy to point and blame?

It is always someone else’s fault?

Feeling hot and bothered, and experiencing an intense need to justify your actions?

Well, ask yourself if it is your ego wanting to be in control.

“If you want to reach a state of bliss, then go beyond your ego and the internal dialogue. Make a decision to relinquish the need to control, the need to be approved, and the need to judge. Those are the three things the ego is doing all the time. It’s very important to be aware of them every time they come up.”
– Deepak Chopra

Disallow Criticisms From Stifling Your Creativity

If you hear a voice within you say “you cannot paint,” then by all means paint and that voice will be silenced.
– Vincent Van Gogh

Paint Quote by Vincent Van Gogh

Once upon a time, I dreamed of being a fashion designer. I filled my sketchbooks with pictures of women wearing clothes that I have designed.

I imagined what it would be like to have models walking down the catwalk, wearing my designs.

I imagined what it would be like to be popular because of my beautiful work.

Self-Love Lessons from Little Swallow

“Our greatest pretenses are built up not to hide the evil and the ugly in us, but our emptiness. The hardest thing to hide is something that is not there.” – Eric Hoffer

Her nickname is Little Swallow in Chinese. It is a name that is very suitable for she is petite, fair-skinned and full of life. Aptly, the word “swallow” in a name is a symbolic of feminine beauty. I was struck by her sunny nature from the moment I met her. Of Korean and Chinese descent, Little Swallow was our local tour guide during our trip in December.

3 Limiting Beliefs That Create Self-Doubt

Have you ever been told messages that caused you tremendous self-doubt? I certainly have received my fair share. At various points in my life, I have been told by naysayers, skeptics and even those with outdated ideas that I am not suitable or cut out to do something.

Paint Quote by Vincent Van Gogh

I have internalized some of the messages. A number of them became my beliefs. Shrouded in fear because of these beliefs, I stopped myself from living freely. It took me quite some time to break free.

Keep Holding On To Faith

I had an amazing dream recently. I saw myself standing on the rooftop of a tall building with a male companion. He did not look like my husband or any friend I know. I strained for a clearer view. However, his face still appeared hazy. I just could not make out who he was. What I sensed instead was that he was some kind of a mentor, a guide probably.

Leap of Faith
(A page on “Holding on to Faith” that I made in my scrapbook album after having my dream. I enjoy making arty reminders!)

In a dramatic turn, I saw myself free falling in the air. I seemed to have fallen off from the top of the building.

Down, down, down I went.
