Christmas Greetings From Singapore Botanic Gardens

During my most recent trips, I was most enraptured by the Christmas tree decorations that have been put up by the Singapore Botanic Gardens. Each tree has been specially decorated by various embassies, schools, MNCs, local organizations and government bodies in Singapore. Today, I bring you a special feature for the holiday season with photos taken at the park.

Singapore Orchid Christmas Tree Decoration
The national flower of Singapore is the Vanda Miss Joaquim, a hybrid orchid cultivar. Here is a tree decorated with sprays of Vanda Miss Joaquim, blue lights, purple balls and gold ribbons….a beautiful creation that is truly Singaporean….

Floral Christmas Tree
Flowers do very well for Christmas decorations, don’t you think?

Recycled Bottles Christmas Tree
Used bottles are recycled as Christmas decorations for this tree….

Christmas Tree Decorated by the American Embassy in Singapore
Embassies of the world submitted a decoration each. Here is the one done by the American embassy….

Christmas Tree Decorated by My Kids’ School
Well, even though they did not get to decorate it, my kids sure got excited when they saw the tree submitted by their school….

Christmas Wonderland at Singapore Botanic Gardens
All in all, the entire park has been turned into a beautiful Christmas Wonderland.

Most of my photos are taken during the day but I highly recommend that Singaporeans enjoy their experience in the night with sparking lights on the trees. Hmmm….my girl was spotted prancing around in her PJs one night…

My Vote for the Best Christmas Tree Decorations
It was quite hard to pick my favorite tree of them all. In the end, I decided that the one by the Indian embassy demonstrated sincerity in its wishes of unity, goodwill and peace. The tree was decorated with pictures of Indian faces. At the top of the tree was a star with the word “Namaste”. Here is how the tree looks like…

Here is what the sign by the side of the tree said…

This is a close shot of the tree’s decorations depicting the friendly faces of India…

And finally, an early Christmas wish:
May you and your loved ones experience magic, joy, light and beauty this holiday season!

Abundance always,

Thanks Evelyn for sharing this- how beautiful. I have never seen anything like this in Australia. People dress up their houses and councils put up banners.

The India tree is truly amazing as love the orchids
Happy Christmas

Hi Suzie, I bet Australia has a different way of expressing the light and beauty of Christmas. In fact, I am off to visit Sydney with my family next weekend.

Oh yes, the trees decorated by the Indian embassy and the one with the orchids are simply lovely!

In loving abundance,
Evelyn

Hi Evelyn,
Will you be in Sydney for New Year? The beach Christmas here is wonderful although I grew up with all the traditional english customs. What are you doing for your birthday?

Evelyn,
The “Namaste” star really speaks volumes. And for me, that really says we are equals here, and that I can see the good in you, and you the good in me. And your two girls look like they are loving this visit! What a fun way to get into the real Christmas spirit…

Evelyn Reply:

Hello Lance, I love your interpretation of the “Namaste” star. My kids enjoyed their trips to the park very much. They love the lights, decorations and all!

Have a Merry Christmas and a Joyous New Year!

Hi Evelyn,
Wow! So beautifully decorated. Must pay a visit to Botanical Garden before they undo those Christmas deco. Think i will go before sunset to catch the day scene and the light-up in the evening.
Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Regards
Richard

Oh yes, good idea to go there during the early earning. If the weather is fine and the ground is not wet, consider having a picnic in the gardens as well!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too πŸ™‚

Love the trees and all the variety of decorations…Celebrations this time of year embrace all cultures and all people. Love the India tree too.

The tradition of honoring and/or decorating trees is common to most ancient wisdom teachings. The Bodhi tree and the Banyan, as well as the Palm are also sacred trees.

The Yule tradition was one of the first to decorate the evergreen tree as a symbol of Solstice – December 21st, the day the sun “stands still” and turns from the dark of winter and back towards “bringing the light.”

Christianity embraced the tradition and carried it forward, yet many of different faiths celebrate the New Year and some Solstice, with a decorated tree. It’s a custom that is shared and enjoyed around the world, a delight for all ages.

Loved viewing the garden and the trees. What a lovely tradition! Many blessings and Good Fortune! Cheryl

Love your choice for favorite tree.

Your girls are adorable, you must’ve missed each other so much during your recent 10- day inner retreat.

The flower tree reminds me our Rose Bowl parade will soon be here, the floats for that are so amazing.

Happy Day!!

Evelyn Reply:

Hi Jannie,

I didn’t dare think too much of my girls when I was away. I knew that my tears would start to fall. I tried to stick to the guidelines of the Vipassana Meditation practice as much as I could.

I love flowers. You’ve got to feature the Rose Bowl parade on your site so that we can all get to see it!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Hello Hilary,

It is indeed lovely to take walks round the park at different times of the day or evening. The same scenery looks completely different with its light and shadows. The speed of my walking has also an impact on what I take in. As do the company I am with.

Merry Christmas to you too! Love and light to you always!

A joyful Christmas to you too, Evelyn. Wow the trees look lovely, except that I’m too lazy to make the trip to see them for myself, so thanks for the photos!

Evelyn Reply:

Hi Daphne,

I think my photos do not do justice to the beautiful scenery. I am not an expert in photography, not forgetting! The place looks pretty magical at night, with sparkling lights and all! Great to go for a romantic date with someone special…hee..!

Have a great Christmas! Do stay in touch!

A very different kind of Christmas Trees. I didn’t know Botanical Garden has something like this set up for Christmas. I think the Christmas tree by the Indian embassy is especially meaningful.

Evelyn Reply:

Hello BK,

Neither was I previously aware that the Botanic Gardens had something specially put up for christmas. I only found out about it when I went to the park the past 1-2 weeks. Perhaps the newspaper should carry an article about it! Oh yes, I enjoyed the one by the Indian embassy very much!

Have a Merry Christmas!

Love and light,
Evelyn

Nadia - Happy Lotus - December 22, 2009

Hi Evelyn,

All those trees were really beautiful. I love the message that went along with the tree from India. That was just so beautiful and I love the idea of a star that says “Namaste”. I will have to add such a star to our tree since that one word says so much.

Thank you so much for sharing those pictures with all of us. You are so blessed to have such a garden in your area. And your daughters are so adorable.

May you have a wonderful holiday season! Wishing you lots of love, light and joy!

Evelyn Reply:

Hello Nadia,

I bet you’d like the same tree as much as I do, too πŸ™‚ Indeed, I am very blessed to be staying near the National Park. Hope to see you here in Singapore some day!

Have a Merry Xmas! Love and light to you too!

Lovely pictures! I like all the trees, and you’re right, the one from India, Namaste celebrating the divine in us, and the pictures of common people, is moving. Happy Holidays!

Marelisa - December 22, 2009

The trees are beautiful Evelyn. I have to agree with you that the one put up by the Indian embassy is the best one; how original to use photos for ornaments. (There’s one billion people in India?! Wow!). Merry Christmas Evelyn! πŸ™‚

Evelyn Reply:

Hello Marelisa,

It is obvious that the Indian embassy put a lot of thought into the decorating of its tree. Isn’t it a lovely message that the embassy is sharing? That the most ordinary of things can be transformed when we put them together in a meaningful way!

Wishing you much love and light this holiday season!

Evelyn

Evita - December 22, 2009

Hi Evelyn!

Oh this was so great! I just love seeing how people from around the world celebrate and the unique and beautiful traditions of each culture.

My favorite tree believe it or not was the one with the recycled bottles – I think it sends a beautiful message to our world today, as Christmas is a perfect time to think about the environment too πŸ™‚

Happy holidays to you again and all the best for the new year!

Chris Edgar - December 23, 2009

Did Abundance Tapestry get to submit a tree? πŸ™‚ But anyway, thanks for this — I like the unique color variations of the trees out there and that gives me some ideas for keeping my own decorations interesting.

Evelyn Reply:

I’d be honored if I am ever ask to submit a tree! The creations are indeed inspiring, aren’t they? Makes us think about going out of the box instead of using traditional decorations!

Merry Christmas to you and your family, Chris!

Evelyn

Hi, Evelyn! A very happy birthday to you!! πŸ™‚

Your park is absolutely beautiful, and I can understand why you love visiting. Your soul sings…

This is a wonderful event, with the trees! With so many lovely displays, how did you ever decide which photos to use? πŸ˜‰ My favorite is the Singapore Orchid tree. I just love the juxtaposition of spiny and soft, dark and light, small balls like earthly berries and tiny blue lights like twinkling stars, the yellow ribbons like smiling rays from the sun, and the glass ornaments dressing it all up… earth, heavens, mankind… All “living” in the tree, supported by it, with it’s feet anchored as it reaches high…it’s branches embracing all… Yes, it’s my favorite.

Many warm wishes to you, Evelyn, for a bright and very happy birthday and a joyous holiday celebration with your beautiful family.

Hugs,
~ Julie

Evelyn Reply:

Hello Julie,

Hi Evelyn – thanks for a great Christmas treat (I did pop over and visit a few days ago) – I am intrigued at the tree with the snow around it! I just might have mentioned this before, but you are a great photographer – love the light behind your girls.

Hope you are having a nice break – cheers from Robin
