How to Meditate Easily

“The affairs of the world will go on forever. Do not delay the practice of meditation.” Milarepa

how to meditate easily I hear it all the time from friends and clients who complain that they are not able to meditate. Stressed out, they were hoping to attain some level of peace and calm through meditation. Unfortunately, they had found relaxing and keeping focus an almost impossible task.

Their complaints reminded me of the time when I first started meditation 12-13 years ago. With a mind that is in constant chatter, I could barely keep still. I gave up within five minutes of my first try. Luckily, over the years, I have been able to achieve better meditation experiences.

In the recent months, I became interested to find out how I can help others make some headway. I was keen to introduce meditation as a practice to some of my clients. They were obviously having trouble handling their everyday issues and they needed to find a better way to de-stress.

I started looking into some of the latest ideas that can potentially help any beginner to meditation who wishes to meditate at home. There are many benefits to meditation, we would all love to experience them. However, not everyone has the chance to go to an ashram in India or allocate a fixed time every week to attend a meetup. And as I have found, even those who have already been meditating for a number of years such as myself, can do with some help during certain challenging periods where we can find it hard to sit quietly.

Entering Alpha State of Relaxation

The busy mind can find it hard to settle right away when just a minute or two ago, it is filled with activity. And so as soon as you hit the meditation cushion, you continue to be restless. Your mind is making plans for the next day, for instance. If worry is in your mind, you won’t find it easy to enter the alpha state of relaxation either.

Should these be the case, consider using relaxing music to alter your state. You can have it fade in the background or you can play it throughout your session. Choose appropriate music with sounds of bells, flowing water or the gentle chirping of birds, for instance. If you have earphones, you can also plug them in while you are on a beach or park where there are people around.

Holding On to Alpha Level of Relaxation

It may not be too difficult to reach some level of peace for a minute or two with music, but holding on to a relaxed state is an entirely different matter. To reach a deep state of consciousness, you will need to be at the alpha level for a sustained period.

The solution?

Binaural beats.

I found out that listening to binaural beats while meditating can help to put us in a zone for a period of time.

So what are binaural beats? Binaural beats are audios made using a computer or synthesizer (and a good pair of stereo headphones), to generate two tones, one in the left ear, one in the right – your brain imagines it hears a third tone equal to the difference between the two tones.

I am not sure how exactly hearing a third tone used in binaural beats can cause us to feel so relaxed but I had found that it seems to work perfectly.

To be in a state of sustained relaxation is pure bliss. I have had such experiences without the use of any technology but this was achieved over the years. Hence, to make some headway, consider trying out binaural beats. Such audios help with training the mind to hold on to a peaceful state for a longer period of time.

Focusing on the Breath

You will need to bring awareness to your breath for meditation.

It is where you keep your focus on, instead of allowing your mind to go all over the place.

During a guided session, your meditation teacher can gently prompt you to keep the focus every now and then. Once you have reached a deep state, such reminders are no longer necessary. Your mind is completely empty……but very aware and very alive.

However, if you are a beginner to meditation and attempting to sit in the privacy of your bedroom, you will need to find a way to remind yourself to maintain focus. Initially, I had found it annoying but as I reflected upon it, I thought that it could be helpful having an audio that gives reminders every now and then. A great one would be an audio with the sound of breathing. The sound file should come on at regular intervals, so that you are kept reminded about directing your attention to your breath.

Let’s Meditate Easily

Well, I have been happy to discover that the series of Omharmonics audios. It was able to address the three areas mentioned above; being, entering and staying in the alpha state and regular reminders.

Omharmonics is a next-generation binaural beats meditation audio technology. Unlike other existing meditation audios, it’s augmented with heartbeat synchronization and ambient sound technology. Apparently, Omharmonics is created using Multivariate Resonance Technology. It is a proprietary sequencing of sound frequencies that are carefully sculpted to stimulate, balance and activate the four holistic intelligences, being physical, mental, emotional and spiritual intelligence.

There is a ton of audio products with binaural beats nowadays. You can find it hard to make a choice on which to consider for purchase. It may be worthwhile to mention that Omharmonics Audios is produced by the reputatable MindValley, the same folks who work with some of the top personal development experts in the world.

Evelyn, thanks for the helpful tips on meditation.

I too found it very hard to clear my mind when trying to meditate. I did try focusing on my breathing but it did not seem to help.

I am now going try Binaural beats, looks like youtube has a few.

I agree that when something seems too hard, especially something that we think is supposed to be relaxing, it’s hard to push through. I think with meditation, some of us have unrealistic expectations of ourselves and of meditation itself. One of my favorite lines is from Pema Chodron. “If it weren’t for my mind, my meditation would be excellent.” Ha! You offer some great suggestions here to help all of us settle down and be with whatever is.
