enneagram quiz: how would you cross the river

You can take an Enneagram quiz to help you determine your personality type.

The Enneagram quiz that I’d like to share: How would you cross the river?

There are many online tests but this is a favourite Enneagram quiz of mine. Also, as an update, I’ve benefited so much from the learnings over the years that I have since become an Enneagram Executive Coach accredited with the International Enneagram Association. I now use the Enneagram to help guide others in their personal growth.

If you don’t already know, the Enneagram is an excellent profiling tool. It describes your personality attributes. You can be one of 9 personality types. According to the Enneagram quiz,  your personality type influences how you would cross the river.

“The study of the Enneagram is the study of Everything that keeps us from Essence.” – Russ Hudson

Take the Enneagram Quiz: How Would You Cross the River?

If you are new to the Enneagram, you may find it difficult to determine which Enneagram personality type you are at first. Trust your intuition and allow the answer the arise.

Which out of the below 9-styles are you:-

ONEs approach the river from the one and only perfect place to cross.

TWOs start to cross the river, then double back to help others to cross. As they get to do this, they never get to cross themselves.

THREEs wear their best and wait at the edge until they are the center of attention. Then, they do attractive, eye-catching strokes as they cross the river.

FOURs either use a variety of fancy styles and do a water ballet or develop a unique distinctive style for crossing the river.

FIVEs never get into the river. They hide behind trees and take notes on what everybody does.

SIXes distrust the river currents. They wait for others to take the ferry across the river first. In the meantime, they think up contingency plans to ensure their safety.

SEVENs splash and dive and generally have a party, and it doesn’t matter if they ever cross the river.

EIGHTs march into the water and swim upstream against the current.

NINEs amble into the water and float downstream with the current.

Pick the one out of the 9 styles that best describe you 🙂

Enneagram Quiz: Understanding Your Personality Type

As I have found, the Enneagram is a powerful tool that can transform all areas of our life. It does not merely describe personality profile. It is more than just a sentence or a few lines of description behind each personality style.

The Enneagram unveils each of our underlying motivations and unconscious fears. It is telling on the way we approach relationships, work and life. Hence, the Enneagram offers an excellent framework for meditation and personal growth.

At first, we may even feel averse to knowing the shadow parts of our personality. We feel exposed, naked and vulnerable. In our aversion, we may not even wish to acknowledge or recognise our personality selves.

There is a shift in awareness when the Enneagram finally finds us! We get to meet our unconscious selves in the Enneagram! It is a revelation of sorts!

What The Enneagram Means

Each of us have a core Enneagram Type. This does not change over time. Your core type is described by personality traits, underlying beliefs, basic desires, and behavioural patterns.

Together, the energy that you are centered in, how the lines configure and the wings that you also operate from, account a great deal for your personality.

1.What Energy Are You Centered In?
2,3 and 4 are centered in heart energy. They are emotional based people
5,6 and 7 are centred in head energy. They are mental based people.
8, 9 and 1 are centered in gut/body energy. They are strong willed people.

2. Lines
Lines mark out your growth paths. They also reveal how you tend to respond under stress; thus highlighting where your traps or are. Put positively, they represent opportunities for growth.

3. Wings
Wings are the adjacent numbers to your Enneagram type. If you have a strong wing, the tendencies of that number show up strongly in your personality. For example, if you are a type 4, you can have strong 5- or 6-wing or both.

How the Enneagram Can Benefit You

Aids in Self-Awareness

Enneagram helps you to examine the distortions and biases that cloud your mind. It reveals how you respond to stress and pain, through the lines that a personality type connects to. In short, understanding your profile type and why you act in a certain manner through Enneagram is a form of awakening. You learn to make a shift into becoming a better version of yourself!

You may find that you don’t merely operate from one core Enneagram Type. You may have a strong wing, for instance. Or, you may operate from two other Enneagram types from secondary energy centers (based on the heart-head-gut groups) as well. Thus, you are aware of your distinct personality type; with its various fixations, idiosyncrasies and compulsions.

You become aware of where you have set traps for yourself repeatedly. You observe the self-sabotaging patterns from success and happiness. With greater awareness, you now undertake a more positive choice in your response to life.

Access to Multiple Resources

On the bright side, you learn about accessing the healthy qualities of each of the Enneagram type that you are strong in. You celebrate your gifts!

Life often presents a variety of situations. Each to be handled differently. You are able to access multiple resources in your response to varying life situations.

Offers a Path of Growth

The process of living is primarily to move in the paths of growth under each personality type. The difficulties that you have been facing in your lifetime are set up so that you can transcend your basic personality type to grow and live more successfully.

It is not possible to live without physical form. The essence of being human is expressed through your personality. Thus, by learning not to reject parts of yourself but to integrate every aspect of you, you would have gained transcendence.

“Living in essence becomes a matter of transcending our ego and in so doing, of discovering and developing our truest self. The search for essence or self-transcendence is not an escape from life but the reverse: a commitment on our most profound level of consciousness to participate in our own creation. ”
– Understanding the Enneagram: The Practical Guide to Personality Types by Don Richard Riso & Russ Hudson

Improve Your Relationships With Others

Enneagram Personality Profiling can be a great tool for relationship building. It is helpful if you need to work harmoniously with others in an organization or for understanding your life partner.

Enneagram allows you to see the core of who others are and to provide you with an avenue of increased awareness, tolerance and validation of other viewpoints. You appreciate the diverse natures of others, helping you to foster and cultivate more meaningful relationships. You learn about working together, drawing on each other’s strengths to develop a better team.

Tool for Wholeness

Through the grid, you see that wholeness is found in the most unlikely places. It is about being aware of your shadow parts and embracing your weaknesses. Being of one Enneagram Type is not better than another. All aspects are necessary to be healthy functioning.

In short, the Enneagram is a framework to personal growth and spiritual wholeness. Ultimately, you learn to “walk the Enneagram” completely by integrating the healthy functioning components of each personality type and becoming centered in the highest values. It is when you lead a whole life; fully awake, aware and free of your attachments.

Enneagram: Shift from Personality to True Essence

Life is a process of spiritual discovery.

Expansion never stops in the unfolding of all there is. In your awakening to deeper insights and new dimensions, you experience a shift. Illusions, seen through the eyes of your personality lens, dissolve. You now take actions that reflect your true nature.

Experiencing a shift from personality is nothing but the realization of your true essence grounded in the physical dimension. You learn to appreciate every aspect of what it means to be human. Walking the path leads to you becoming your highest potential. Awakened to the highest values, you come full circle through the grid of the Enneagram!

I’ve never felt in tune with the Enneagram before. I could never figure out my type and felt confused about wings and all the possibilities. This is an excellent explanation, Evelyn. I have more understanding now and I appreciate the the Enneagram arose from sacred sources. Thank you!

@Elle, thank you! Did you come up with any style on how you would cross the river? The Enneagram is a great tool for self-understanding and also offers a spiritual map for growth.

@Sandra, I was resistant to the Enneagram myself initially. However, after I understood it a lot better, I could appreciate it as tool and guide. The best way to know which type you are is experiential. This means to sit quietly and get a sense of your base fears and motivations. Another way is get to know others who already know which types they are. By being near others, you get a sense of their energy.

Hi Evelyn, I’ve been reading about the enneagram and listening to various podcasts for a while now and have identified myself as a self preservation 9, but I wouldn’t use the 9’s way to cross the river I would go more for the 8 or 1’s way, both my wings. I don’t know what this indicates!
